Sara from farming friends was interested in knowing more about mink and raccoons.
I wrote a couple of posts about the problems we have had with mink.

Mink are a member of the weasel family.
They are between 18 and 24 inches long and have a tail that is a bit bushy. They can weigh up to 3lbs. The female is smaller than the male.
They can fit through a space as small as an inch.
They are usually nocturnal but the ones that come around here don't seem to know that!
When they are on the prowl we see them at all times during the day. They are a fast, fearless and ruthless killer.
Their method of killing is to bit though the neck or skull. Often they kill much more than they can possibly eat. They will sometimes take their kill away to eat later.
Mink live near water. Usually in rock crevices along river or creek banks. They are excellent swimmers.
The fur is relatively short, with a coat of a soft, dense, underfur covered by glossy, lustrous guard hairs. Mink also have anal musk glands and can discharge a unpleasant odor if frightened or disturbed. Unlike skunks, however, they cannot forcibly spray musk.
There are no known frightening devices that are effective for deterring mink predation.
There are no repellents, toxicants, or fumigants registered for mink damage control.
Trapping them in live traps seems to work for us but usually only after they have done a great deal of damage to our chicken and duck population.
